When I was in IT it was all about the desktop. You know, the overpowered custom-built system with more monitors than we knew what to do with.

(Wait, this is still true…)

But, that was about a long time ago. The movement to mobile was inevitable and more IT environments are going “mobile” for more than just the size. There are innumerable benefits, and for those environments that have gone all the way they know how liberating it really can be.

Here are 7 great desktop replacement laptops that you could consider for your IT team’s needs:

    Noticeably no Dell’s on the list? I’m an apple fan myself, but I feel like Dell’s got a pretty good product…

      Don’t start me on Dell …. they’ve been around in IT as long as I have and credit to them for still being here but their approach and support and quality are all…. … sorry, I’ll take my DD (dell dislike) elsewhere now :)

    I would say just about any laptop can replace most desktops now a days. Matter of fact even most of the new netbooks coming out this year have plenty of power to get what most people need out of a computer. Unless you’re really into gaming probably the only benefit to a desktop is you get to have a really big screen.

    Good list of laptops and I love the Asus products at the moment. I even believe they came top in a “least faults reported” survey for last year.

    I also firmly believe you could save even more money by buying netbooks. Consider how much folks actually use a desktop / laptop for these days and in terms of business usage it’s likely only mail and office based apps on the whole. And do we need laptops for that with centralised / cloud storage?

    If money was no object then everyone would have to have a personalised laptop from Alienware (even tho’ Dell now own them).

    My Rig:
    Dell Latitude E6500 Core2Duo 2.53, 4GB Ram, Win 7 Pro, Extended Battery, 1TB External HD, Docking stand w/ Samsung 18.5 LCD

    It does everything I want it to (and more) and with having a 15.4 Screen, it’s light enough to take with me when I travel, and We got a great price (sale was 700 below retail…) and had a 3yr warranty

    It just works.
