AMD and Intel, Where Do You Sit?
This battle has been waging for a long time and I’m just curious where most people in ministry sit.
So, are you a Intel fanboi or an AMD upstart? Which one do you prefer and why?

Measuring Success in a World of Digital Pirates
For me it always comes down to, “Does it work?”
We had to purchase some notebooks for people that would be doing light stuff. Email, MS Office, some web and AS/400 emulation. You don’t need a powerhouse notebook for that, so we were able to save some money by getting them Dell notebooks with AMD processors.
Of course, in my geekier days, I preferred AMD over Intel because you overclock those things like mad.
I agree. My laptop has an AMD. It’s not bad and its certainly not weak, but I’ll admit, I do prefer Intel chips. I can’t really explain it, I’ve just always leaned towards Intel.

AMD has notoriously spec’d their hardware at it’s max (well before over-clock). INTEL has always underspec’d their chips. This is why a 3.2 Ghz INTEL chip always seems faster and more reliable than a 3.2 Ghz AMD chip.
I myself, prefer AMD because of cost effectiveness and I prefer ATI cards from personal experience of GeForce cards catching on fire… most won’t have this problem as most don’t over-clock their gear. AMD and ATI much like tim has posted go hand in hand together.

Most of our desktops are Dell OptiPlex with Core2 Duo processors however last year I did a batch of custom builds to save money and chose AMD processors. I think all the PCs I’ve built for home have been AMD as well. I guess that means I don’t have a loyalty to either brand.

I disliked Intel’s aggressive marketing tactics back in the early/mid 90′s and my like of AMD stems from then. They were always cheaper, more powerful and just worked and when they did their first ‘clean coded’ chip – the K5 – in 1996 I was sold.
With me it isn’t a Mac v PC type thing, just serious respect for a competitor that stood up to bully boy Intel.

I don’t mind either way. I usually just stick with the one that is most cost effective at the time.
I don’t use processor intensive software, and so it really makes no difference. I usually end up with AMD due to cost. If AMD can run what I need, why should I pay more for Intel, at least that is my opinion.

We’ve used AMD system in the past with ok results. These days, however, Intel is used, especially with a growing number of Mac users. It should be noted, though, that most of my users choose systems by manufacturer, not CPU-maker. Dell is more widely purchased and they have very few AMD-based systems. Most of the other manufacturers have a wider range of systems with Intel than with AMD. Whenever I’m asked about which CPU to get (and this is a very rare question), the asker is not looking for the technical differences; they want to know if their software will work.
Me? I drive a Macbook Pro so Intel is it for now.

I’m an Intel guy at this point. Tried AMD a few generations ago and the Intel chips of the comparable speed specs were trashing them performing the same core tasks. I’m always open to what will work best, but haven’t seen any evidence to cause me to change, and the price point isn’t too different.

I agree with most of other commentators. In Sri Lanka where I live AMD is dirty cheap when compared to Intel processors but it offers almost the same performance. AMD is a cost effective solution as ministries and churches have to consider the cost all the time.
My desktop is based on AMD Sempron and I know the kind of things I have done with that (Audio and Video editing, Graphic designing etc…)

Gotta love the RISC guys. Though, with Compaq (who picked up most of the DEC stuff) selling all the intellectual property related to the Alpha to Intel, I guess that makes you an Intel guy?

but I am stuck with Intel because of the MBP I use and the stupid desire for a MacPro.
